Slice 25: Crayons are for Paper ONLY

She knows the rules. KNOWS THEM! So why then did she decide this morning at 6:22 would be an ideal time to use her crayons.

In her room.

On her headboard.

Her WHITE headboard.

And her elephant sound machine.

Her WHITE elephant sound machine.

When I found her, she was quiet.

SUPER quiet.

Hand on headboard covering the “evidence.”

Other hand clenched around something.

What’s in your hand?!

Nothing.

Show Mommy.

Slowly opening her hand, K revealed crayons.

Kennedy…

Crayons are for downstairs only.

Yes, I’m glad you know Mommy’s rule. So show me what’s under your hand.

Slowly moving her hand, K revealed the marks on her headboard.

Kennedy…

Crayons are for paper only.

Yes, I’m glad you know Mommy’s rule. So why did you do this?

[Silence]

Kennedy…

[insert sobbing]

Kennedy…

Mommy? Can I have a hug?

[insert heart broken mama]

Kennedy, we will clean this up together after school, okay?

Okay, Mommy. I’m sorry. Crayons are for paper only.

  1. Considering the brevity of this, I am really impressed with what you captured. I could feel the frustration and also the sadness from both parties. I hope you’re able to get it cleaned up!

  2. I love the brevity of your lines and the way you punctuate dialogue without conventional punctuation. It adds a craft to this piece that makes my heart break with you at the end. Well done! Mom and Writer!
